Revs Institute on the Road: I Know What You Did Last Summer, Part Two

If it’s Labor Day it must be Lime Rock, the subject of the second of our three photo essays on the summer adventures of cars from Revs Institute. The famed Connecticut track hosted its annual Historic Festival Sept. 1 – 4, with a couple of cars from the Institute on hand.

The Collier Collection’s 1966 Ford GT40 won its class at Daytona in 1967, with Jacky Ickx (a Belgian and six-time winner at LeMans) and Dr. Dick Thompson (known as “The Flying Dentist,” because dentistry was his day job) at the wheel. The car is the first of many racing Ford GTs that were sponsored by Gulf Oil, including the Gulf-sponsored Ford winners at LeMans.

The GT40 was driven at Lime Rock this year by another LeMans winner, Britain’s Richard Attwood, who prevailed in the 24-hour marathon in 1970 in a Porsche 917.

Also making the trek from Naples to Lime Rock was Revs Institute’s 1962 Lotus 23, a much-heralded racer from that period. It was driven by Dave Handy, co-founder and principal of Virginia-based SascoSports, a full restoration and race prep shop, and tire supplier for contemporary and vintage racing.
