Within the Revs Institute's rich and expanding collection of photographic images, a scholar can explore a broad spectrum of explicit themes and subtexts in the history of transportation, technology, design, business, industry, social action, motorsports and historical preservation.

A collection of nearly seven hundred thousand photographic images provides scholars with a panoramic view of the history of automotive transportation, technology, design, motorsports and historical preservation. These images range from glass slides and albumen prints, to transparencies and modern photographic processes. Film footage includes celluloid and video tape formats, and offers a snapshot of motor racing from the pre-war period through to the 1980s. Themes include various aspects of international motor sports, production and custom body cars, engineering features, auto shows, advertising photos and publicity photos of industry personalities and race car drivers. There is geographic coverage throughout Europe and America, with particular strengths at major international Grand Prix and sports car events in Europe, and a broad range of road course and oval events in the United States.

Noteworthy holdings in the photographic library include:

  • The Ludvigsen Photo Archive consists of over 250,000 images of historical automobiles and motor racing. In addition to the celebrated author and historian Karl Ludvigsen’s personal and professional photography, the Ludvigsen library encompasses the photographic work of Rodolfo Mailander, Max LeGrand, Edward Eves, John Dugdale, Stanley Rosenthal and Ove Nielsen. Another key holding in this brilliant historical image archive is the photograph archive of British motoring historian and journalist Cyril Posthumus and the photo files of the Dalton Watson publishing firm.
  • The Collier Photographic Collection consists of more than 40,000 photographs. Images of extraordinary and historically significant automobiles, race cars and events such as auto shows, motor races and biographical images of industry and motorsport personalities are found in this collection.
  • The Bruce R. Craig Collection consists of more than 25,000 photographs that chronicle motorsports across the 20th century. Find historical stock car, sprint car, grand prix and biographical images of motorsports personalities in this collection.
  • The George Phillips Collection holds over 60,000 motor racing images captured by the highly regarded Chief Photographer at Autosport magazine throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
  • The Albert R. Bochroch Collection consists of several thousand images he took at 1960s motor sports races. Strengths include the United States Grand Prix, the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix at Riverside, California and Bahamas Speed Week.
  • The Peter Blair-Richley Collection is a focused collection of photographic images that capture the world’s most significant automobiles. A scholar finds here dramatic and innovative design trends, vanguard technology in a historical context and a roll call of world cars across more than a century of automotive history. Also found in the Richley Collection: one-of-a-kind photo albums and scrapbooks that reveal rare images of historical conveyances that preceded the automobile and historical military vehicles.
  • The James Torpey Photograph Collection – Includes 200 black and white photographic images of East Coast races from the late 1950s through the early 1960s. Here is a good resource for Lime Rock and Bridgehampton contests. James Torpey was a professional motor sport photographer.
  • The Harold Javetz Photograph Collection – Includes 100 color slide images made by this photographer of the races at Sebring, Daytona Beach and Nassau Speed Week in the early 1960s.
  • The William Hewitt Photograph Collection – Includes 30,000 black and white images of motor sports events on the West Coast. From 1953 until 1966, Bill Hewitt photographed many of the major race contests at Pebble Beach, Laguna Seca, Riverside, Candlestick Park, Bonneville and at numerous other venues
  • Fred Pardini began his journalism career as a photographer for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin in 1955 and later in the 1950s moved to the San Francisco Examiner. In 1963 Pardini received the Press Club Award for best photograph of the year. In the Mid-1960s he moved to broadcast film work. Pardini shot photographs at motor sports races in the Bay area in the early 1960s. This collection of 161 photographic negatives is from his personal collection of images he captured at the Pacific Grand Prix at Laguna Seca from 1960 through 1963. Notable drivers appear in these images including Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Phil Hill, Jo Bonnier, Masten Gregory and Briggs Cunningham.
  • The Duke Q. Manor Photograph Collection includes 12,000 black and white and color images focused on motor sports in the 1960s.
